Lawyer: Lady Vols' Media Director Forced To Retire

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An attorney said Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart gave the woman in charge of media relations for the Lady Vols less than four hours to decide to retire or be fired for "insubordination" earlier this month.

David Burkhalter wrote to Tennesssee chancellor Jimmy Cheek that Debby Jennings had retained him to try and resolve the issue amicably, according to records first obtained by the Knoxville News Sentinel on Wednesday. Burkhalter said he has advised Debby Jennings she could sue Tennessee for discrimination and retaliation over her internal complaints of gender and age discrimination.

The attorney said Hart told Jennings on May 15 to retire, resign or be terminated after 35 years with the Lady Vols. Jennings found her computer was gone when she returned to her office.
