NASHVILLE, Tenn. - No matter what your Memorial Day plans are, one thing is
certain, you'll be dealing with near-record temperatures all weekend long.
Friday's steamy weather was just the beginning.
"I think we're breaking a record this weekend. I've lived here 18 years
and I don't know if I've ever experienced 97 degrees in the beginning of June
or end of May," said Dawn Williams.
That's why she joins hundreds of other parents on Friday morning, who took
their kids to Nashville Shores to cool off.
The staff there says Memorial Day Weekend is always a busy one, but they
think this year's potentially record-breaking temperatures will make it even
busier.
"We get excited, because we know there's a lot of people that are going to
come out, and look for ways to beat the heat, and with all our attractions, and
we've got the perfect place to do it," says Daniel Strobel with Nashville
Shores.
What's good for business at a water park, though, can be dangerous for
Nashville's homeless.
The Nashville Rescue Mission opened its cooling shelters on Friday, which is
earlier than in previous years.
"When I see high temperatures like that, I think about people outside
suffering, no place to go, no shelter," said Ed Grimes with the Rescue
Mission. "So we're going to open up our dayroom and serve cold
water, and just make it a shelter from the heat."
The shelter will be open day and night, throughout the holiday weekend.
