Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A birthday party took a tragic turn after a recent high school graduate was gunned down.

Police continue the search for the gunman who shot and killed 17-year-old Antwand Covington, Jr. as he was arriving at a Sweet 16th birthday party. Antwand was the oldest brother of six boys and had just graduated from Hillsboro High school.

Hermitage Precinct detectives said they are following strong leads as they work to identify the gunman responsible for Saturday night's shooting death on Wesleyville Drive in Antioch.

"He's my oldest brother. He's been there for me since I was born, and I love him. And whoever did this, they going to pay one day," said Dwight Simmons, the victim's little brother. "It's just sad how people coming out here with guns and killing people for no reason."

Police said Covington arrived at 10:45 p.m. in a car with other people to attend the party.  Almost immediately after he got out of the car, someone standing on the street a few houses away shot him. Covington's friends put him back into the car and rushed him to Summit Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
