COLUMBIA, Tenn. (AP) - The Maury County Arts Guild has dropped plans to buy the old Polk Theatre in downtown Columbia.
Instead, The Daily Herald reported the group will try to purchase the former home of the First Baptist Church to renovate into a cultural arts center.
A spokeswoman said the guild was unable to raise enough money to buy the theatre, and the church could be acquired and renovated more quickly.
Susan Manning, arts guild president, described it as a "mini Ryman Auditorium," referring to the former tabernacle in Nashville that is a venue for music including the Grand Ole Opry at times.
