Police: Retaliation Appears To Be Motive In Sunday Shooting

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police said that retaliation appeared to be the motive in a weekend shooting outside a funeral.

Officials said a gunman shot the teen brother of an accused murderer in the neck, just after a funeral for a teen who was shot and killed at a sweet 16 birthday party in Southeast Nashville,

Orlando Martin, 19, attended the funeral service Sunday night and was shot afterward. Martin's brother, William, remains accused of the shooting death of 17-year-old Antwand Covington on June 9.

Police said Martin was at the corner of 14th Avenue North and Horton Avenue when a beige or gold car containing four young men drove slowly by.  Witnesses told police that the four men in the car had also attended the service.

Detectives including the Gang Unit were pursuing leads to identify the shooter and the three others in the car.

Martin was hit in the neck, and remained in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
