NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A huge celebration was held at Tennessee State University as they celebrated the 100th anniversary of the school's founding.

On Tuesday, the school held a "Day of Recognition" which was declared by the Governor and the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee. Mayor Karl Dean joined other local and university officials to plant a tree in front of an historical marker that honors the founding of the university.

"It marks the 100 years, it's going to say this is a marking point for the Tennessee State University. It's going to grow bigger and keep on growing for the next 100 years, and 100 years after that," said Courtney Lewis the SGA Vice President.

A proclamation from the Governor was also presented to the school in recognition of TSU's contribution to the citizens of the state.
