Officials Urge Caution As Temperatures Near 100

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP/NewsChannel 5) - The National Weather Service said temperatures will climb into the high-90s Wednesday and Thursday, and likely hit 100 degree mark or above by Friday and Saturday.

Forecasters said in an advisory that it will feel like a "pressure cooker" in Middle Tennessee by Friday.

NewsChannel 5 meteorologist Lelan Statom said high temperatures will hit 99 on Thursday, and could reach 102 by Friday and 100 on Saturday. A slight cooling will come at the beginning of next week.

No precipitation is in the forecast and nearly all of the state ranges from abnormally dry conditions to drought status with the most severe conditions in the Reelfoot Lake region of northwest Tennessee.

Burn bans have been issued in several mid-state cities and counties.

Memphis-area officials are urging residents who are sick, elderly or don't have an air conditioner to take special precautions as temperatures approach 100 degrees and the risk of heat-related deaths rises.

In Shelby County, officials are telling people to check on elderly relatives and neighbors who live alone to make sure they are safe from the heat. In the past two years, 29 people have died from heat-related causes in Shelby County.
