RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. – A grass fire scorched a large field and destroyed a barn in Rutherford County on Thursday afternoon.
The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m. Thursday near Blackman and Baker Roads. Approximately 25 acres of wheat was burned.
Officials said the fire began when a resident was burning a small brush fire in his yard and piece of paper floated away and caught the neighboring field on fire. He was able to plow breaks around the blaze to keep it from reaching nearby homes.
Rutherford County EMA official Randy White said they had to evacuate some homes. He also said at least two firefighters were treated due to the heat.
Fire crews remained on the scene dousing the burnt field in hopes of controlling flare-ups.
