NASHVILLE, Tenn. - With the hot and extremely dry temperatures, the Metro Nashville Police Department will be cracking down on fireworks this year.
Fireworks are already illegal in Metro, but this year police are announcing a Zero Tolerance policy. Ignoring the ban could cost residents a hefty fine.
City officials have encouraged residents to go to Riverfront Park downtown to watch professional fireworks rather than try to set off their own.
"All patrol officers will be checking for any fireworks used or sold and there will be a zero tolerance and individuals will be issued state misdemeanor citations," said Metro Officer Gerry Gann.
Police said the conditions have made grass too dry and too much of a fire hazard to allow any personal fireworks this year. Those who do not follow the ban will be issued a $50 citation and the fireworks will be confiscated.
