What's The Truth about Record-Breaking Heat?

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As we hit some of these record breaking temperatures, there are some myths about summer heat, and NewsChannel 5 decided to look into some of them.

First myth: Turning on and off your air conditioning unit will use more energy.

"The truth is the longer you can keep you AC from running while you are not home, the more energy; the more money you will save at the end of the day," said NES spokesperson Laurie Parker.

She says NES doesn't suggest turning off the unit when it is as hot as it's been, but to save energy and money some turn to another cooling method; ceiling fans.

When you turn a ceiling fan on, you think it's going to cool off the room, but in actuality it's pretty much like a snow globe. It takes hot air and moves it around.

Many people have probably heard of the saying, "It's so hot outside you could cook an egg on the ground."

Truth is, when a cooking pan is left out in 100 degree weather for 45 minutes and then an egg is put on it, even left to sit 40 minutes, there was only slightly runny mess.

"It has to be pretty hot to cook an egg and this light colored sidewalk here, is not quiet hot enough; but when I shot some of the black asphalt nearby, it's about right in this hot temperature," said Becky Matthews with the Adventure Science Center.

When asked if it can be too hot to rain Matthews answered, "The way rain happens is the warm air rising hits some cooler air masses in the mid-level atmosphere, so if there is cooler air up there, then it could still rain," said Matthews.

And as for clothing lighter loose clothing with more coverage, like cotton or linen, works best to keep cool in hot temperatures.
