DEKALB COUNTY, Tenn. – Inmates at the DeKalb County jail had to be moved to other jails after the air conditioning went out over the weekend.
Some 38 male inmates at the jail in Smithville had to be moved to other jails in Rutherford, Warren and Smith Counties. The central air unit at the jail annex gave out after a city transformer blew.
Sheriff Patrick Ray said they tried using industrial fans to keep things cool, but it didn't work. Temperatures in some cells approached 100 degrees or more.
The sheriff hopes to move them all back later Monday, once air conditioning is restored.
There were no security problems that arose due to the AC issue and move.
