VASSAR, Mich. (AP) - The Army said a soldier who grew up in Michigan is one of only five service members from any military branch to lose all four limbs in combat during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and survive.

Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, of Vassar, Michigan, has been recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in suburban Washington, D.C. He recently was allowed to move to an outpatient facility.

The 25-year-old was hurt when he dropped a bag on an improvised explosive device April 10 during his third deployment to Afghanistan.

Now, cheered on by his wife and infant daughter as well supporters from across the country, Mills is facing a long journey to recovery.

Mills told The Associated Press he plans to "work hard every day."
