NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The explosion at the Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in June that caused the evacuation of more than 5,000 guests is being called an accident and is being blamed on equipment failure.
Officials said the explosion happened when natural gas got into a steam line inside a mechanical room near an elevator in the Delta Atrium. After an inspection at the Opryland Hotel including the fire marshal, representatives from Gaylord, and the hotel's insurance company, it has been determined that a leak in the heat exchanger allowed natural gas to mix with steam in a line.
That heat exchanger is being sent to a lab in Atlanta for further testing to pinpoint the exact cause of the failure.
A final report could be a few months away.
