Man Critical Of Police In Fatal Shooting Of Father

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The son of a man shot and killed by a Knoxville police officer said police knew his father had mental issues and was not violent.

Bryan Capps told the Knoxville News Sentinel that authorities could have handled the situation differently.

Paul Edward Capps was shot Friday night after he allegedly attacked the officer.

Authorities said the 47-year-old Capps attacked Officer Brian Leatherwood when the officer responded to an assault call. Capps died at the scene.

Bryan Capps said police had been to the address before and knew his father was nonviolent and had mental issues.

He said he doesn't think his father realized he was attacking a police officer.

About 30 people attended a candlelight vigil Saturday evening in front of where Paul Capps lived with his mother.
