Woman Who Allegedly Left 19 Kids Alone Waives Hearing

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The woman accused of leaving 19 children alone inside a house with no food or air conditioning for about a week has waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

Jackie Farah remained in the Warren County, Kentucky jail on $100,000 bond. She was charged with 14 counts of criminal abuse, and five counts of wanton endangerment.

The case against Farah will now head to a grand jury.

Officials found the children in the home in Bowling Green living in filth last week. Officers said the home had a temperature reading of 90 degrees when they got there.

Her children are now in state custody, although some of the children staying with them were cousins, and their parents came to get them.

Farah and Irving "Joe" Smith allegedly told a neighbor last week that they had a family emergency in Michigan and asked the neighbor to check on the kids.

Deputies said the children behaved as if they were often left alone.

U.S. Marshals are now helping in the search for Smith, who is believed to be in the Chicago area.

He faces the same charges as Farrah, including criminal abuse and endangerment.
