MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- After a heat wave lasting more than a week, even the highways in Tennessee are showing the strain.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said high temperatures caused a piece of pavement on Interstate 55 in Memphis to buckle Monday.

TDOT spokesman Bill Hazlerig told WMC-TV two trouble spots affected one lane of the road. He said the bump was about 6 inches high and enough to make a vehicle go airborne.

TDOT said moisture and expansion of materials under the pavement contributed to the buckling.

The highway remained open during the repairs, but traffic backed up for several miles just south of the Interstate 240 loop because of lane closures.
