Carter Planning Director Sues Mayor, County

Posted: Updated:

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) - The Carter County planning director is suing the county and mayor over his arrest on a theft charge that was dropped.

Chris Schuettler and his wife are seeking $600,000 in damages with a lawsuit that the Elizabethton Star reported was filed last week. It names Carter County and Mayor Leon Humphrey as defendants.

Schuettler was arrested a year ago on charges that he falsified his timesheets. A grand jury declined to indict after the defense presented evidence that cellular phone records may have incorrectly indicated Schuettler was in North Carolina during times he reported being at work in East Tennessee.

The lawsuit claims Humphrey provided false information to state investigators after his previous efforts to oust the planning and zoning director failed.

Humphrey declined to comment.
