BELL BUCKLE, Tenn. (AP) - Some water service customers are steamed at Bell Buckle over rates they said are unequal and illegal.
Attorney Jay Jackson told the Shelbyville Times-Gazette on Tuesday that he's representing clients who live just outside the city limits and pay a higher rate than in-town customers. He said they also are concerned about water quality and pressure.
Officials in Bell Buckle, a town of about 500 people 45 miles southeast of Nashville, said testing shows the water is safe. They wouldn't comment more because of pending legal action.
Bell Buckle Mayor Dennis Webb said in May that the city previously was told it could charge out-of-town customers more. The University of Tennessee's Municipal Technical Advisory Service recently advised that rates must be uniform to receive state and federal funds.
