Arriola's Name Removed From Signs At County Clerk's Offices

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The removal of former County Clerk John Arriola's name from signs at offices across Davidson County has begun.

Arriola's name is now gone from the signs at the branch just off Central Pike in Hermitage.

Arriola spent more than $34,000 taxpayer dollars to have the signs created with his name.

He submitted his resignation on June 25, in order to avoid state criminal charges.

He'd been under fire ever since a News Channel 5 investigation revealed Arriola pocked thousands of dollars for weddings he performed on taxpayer time.

That resignation does not mean Arriola is out of the woods when it comes to the IRS or federal prosecutors, but in the meantime, the local focus has shifted to finding his replacement.

A state audit concluded in January that Arriola may have pocketed as much as $119,000 in illegal fees over five years.

Arriola, a former state representative, was elected Davidson County clerk in 2006. The clerk was paid $115,000 annually.

Metro Council will vote August 7 on an interim County Clerk.
