Local Guitar Teachers Turn To Skype For Lessons

SMYRNA, Tenn. - Lance Allen uses the iMac in his office to help tune instruments and even send his students video feedback but now his computer is helping bring his lessons to musicians who can't travel to the music city.

"We're actually looking at each other and we can say whatever we want, we don't have to type it out," Allen explains.

A few years ago, Allen decided to branch out from this small music suite in Smyrna with the help of Skype. He now offers guitar lessons to anyone who has access to Skype and a camera.

"I've taught people all around the world, my goal is to teach someone in every state," he adds.

On Wednesday night, Lance had setup a Skype call with Beth who was 287 miles away Indiana. Just as if she had been sitting right in front of him, the two went over notes and finger placement.

"I would not be taking guitar lessons if it were not for Skype," Beth says.

Lance says he charges a little extra for the Skype lessons but he also is able to give those students extra feedback via videos and email.
