Campaign Controversy Over Certificate Of Occupancy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - One of the candidates in the Republican primary for the State House of Representatives in District 50 has come under fire for the address listed as his home.

According to state documents Charles Williamson put a Baker Road address in Goodlettsville as his home address inside District 50.

But records with Metro Codes show there is no certificate of occupancy for that Baker Road address. Williamson said he pulled those permits 10 years ago when he built the house.

"I remember visiting Metro Codes and Sonny West, Mr. Sonny West, great guy, helped me walk through those processes. So we pulled all the proper permits," Williamson said.

But zoning administrator Bill Herbert said he does not have any record of permits for that address, and records show there is no certificate of occupancy for the house.

It it illegal to live in a home without a certificate of occupancy.

Williamson said there must be a of mix-up with Metro's records because he understood that property was finished and permitted in 2002.

He thinks this issue may have to do with more than just permits.

"I think it's just a form of mud slinging and we're going to keep our campaign positive, we're going to stay on a high note. We've have a lot of positive responses today," Williamson said.

Williamson said he will work to correct the issue.

Tennessee state law does not require a candidate to live in the district they are running to represent during the primary. It does mandate they reside in the district before the general election.
