COVE CREEK, N.C. (AP) - Workers are shutting down a tunnel on Interstate 40 in the North Carolina mountains to inspect the structure.
The Department of Transportation said the first tunnel heading east will be closed from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. starting Sunday and ending Wednesday with traffic sent along a service road near the tunnel. The tunnel will be closed again on July 29.
Workers will also inspect the other tunnels on I-40, but only one lane will be closed at a time. The DOT says inspections on the second eastbound I-40 tunnel will run July 29 through August 1 and again on August 5. Inspections on the lone westbound I-40 tunnel will be August 7 and August 12 through August 15.
The DOT said workers will also study possible tunnel lighting upgrades.
