CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Police said a three-year-old child shot himself in the foot at his home in Clarksville.
The child's mother called police around 5 p.m. Sunday after the shooting at a home on Buttermere Drive. She told police she was in the kitchen when she heard the shot, and found the toddler in the living room with a gunshot wound.
The mom applied pressure and elevated the boy's foot until emergency crews arrived. He was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical center with non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation showed that the child had found the 9 millimeter gun unsecured and started to play with it on the couch. It discharged, and a bullet hole was also found in the couch.
There was also a 10-month old child inside the home at the time of the discharge.
Police continue to investigate; no charges have been filed.
It is the second time a child has discharged an unsecured firearm in Clarksville this month. On July 8, a 6-year-old child discharged a firearm that was left unattended.
Police recommend anyone with firearms to ensure they are properly secured for safety.
