Eastern Kentucky Shelter Euthanizes More Than 200 Dogs

Posted: Updated:

HAZARD, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky animal shelter has euthanized more than 200 dogs after a distemper outbreak.

Dr. Danika Harvey, a veterinarian at Appalachian Animal Shelter in Hazard, told WYMT-TV the action by Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter in Perry County was necessary. Harvey said the dogs couldn't have been adopted out because they would put other canines at risk of getting the disease.

Harvey said the best way to prevent distemper is vaccination. Symptoms of the virus include upper respiratory problems, runny eyes and diarrhea.

Officials have closed the shelter while workers try to eradicate the disease.
