TCAP Results Show Improvements In School Districts

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Results from the 2012 TCAP tests released Thursday by the Tennessee Department of Education showed significant improvements in school districts across the state.

A news release said nearly all of the state's 136 districts saw proficiency levels increase, as well as two-thirds of students showing improvement in every subject on the achievement test for grades 3-8.

Math skills improved greatly in all districts. More than 50 districts saw double-digit growth over last year in Algebra I, with some reporting gains greater than 30 percentage points. Additionally, 23 districts saw double-digit growth in grades 3-8 math.

Williamson County was the top performing district in the state of Tennessee, with 82 percent of students grades 3-8 proficient or advanced in reading, 73 percent in math, 90 percent in science, and 98 percent in Social Studies.

"In every subject area you can see we've gone up tremendously. We are the highest achieving district in all testing subject areas in the state Tennessee," said Williamson County, Director of Schools, Mike Looney.

Metro-Nashville Public Schools showed 3.0 percent growth over last year's results with 40.6 percent of students with proficient or advanced levels in reading on the 3-8 level. In math, they saw a 6.5 percent increase with 39.3 percent with proficient or advanced levels.

The overall results were released in June, and students showed improvement for the second straight year. The tests showed Tennessee students improved in math and science, and about half were proficient in reading.

This year, the tests have more meaning for elementary and middle school students. For the first time, TCAP scores make up 15 to 25 percent of their end-of-year grades.

The scores are also tied to teacher tenure evaluations.

Education officials will meet next week to talk about the scores.

District-by-district TCAP results can be accessed on the education department website.
