MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The lawyer for a man charged with fatally beating his 3-year-old son and dumping the body in a trash bin said his client is not guilty.

Maurice Brown Sr. made an appearance Thursday in General Sessions court on murder charges in the death of his son, Maurice Brown Jr.

Brown Sr. told the judge that John Perry, a lawyer from Southaven, Mississippi, is going to be his lawyer in the case.

Brown Sr. told police July 1 that he had awakened from a nap to find his son missing. The boy's body was found in a trash bin two days later.

Perry told reporters that Brown Sr. is not guilty and is feeling horrible that his son is dead. An official plea won't be entered until Brown Sr. is indicted.
