FRANKLIN, Ky. – An old hospital building in Franklin, Kentucky was destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at the abandoned Carter Moore Hospital in Downtown Franklin.

About 25 people were evacuated from nearby apartments.

Witnesses said smoke could be seen for miles. Crews were still battling the blaze about seven hours later, dousing the smoking building with water to keep it from rekindling.

The Daily News in Bowling Green reported much of the hospital was built between 1908 and 1912. It sits in the middle of a complex of structures connected by catwalks.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known.

Franklin City Manager Kenton Powell said the city has been trying to obtain a $500,000 grant to demolish the building after learning that an interior beam had collapsed.
