3 GOP Senators, 21 GOP House Members Challenged

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A race that pits a Republican state House leader against a retired Marine backed by the National Rifle Association tops the two dozen challenges to GOP incumbents in Thursday's primary.

Republican Caucus Chairwoman Debra Maggart of Hendersonville is opposed by retired Lt. Col. Courtney Rogers.

Rogers was endorsed by the NRA, which is still outraged that Maggart didn't push through legislation to allow workers to store guns in vehicles parked on company lots regardless of their employers' wishes.

In its endorsement of Rogers, the NRA accused Maggart of "procedural maneuvering behind closed doors" to defeat the bill opposed by the business lobby.

As for the Democrats, the party ran 47 challengers and incumbents. Several of those races, however, have incumbents facing each other because of redistricting.
