GALLATIN, Tenn. - The Sumner County Board of Education voted to delay the beginning of school over concerns about the budget.
In a meeting held Thursday night, the school board voted 10-1 to delay the start of school until the budget can be approved.
"I think that's a terrible idea," parent Sharon Covington said. "It's going to take away from our kid's education. I'm not for that at all."
The School Board asked the County for $7.6 million more this year to accommodate increases in the student population and the cost of doing business. County Commissioners said fulfilling the district's budget request would require a tax increase and it's something they're not willing to do.
Sumner County Commissioners expect to finalize the school district's budget next month. The offical start date of school has been pushed back indefinitely.
