Brother: John Ford Close To Release From Prison

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The brother of John Ford said the former state senator from Memphis soon will be released from federal prison after serving four years in the Tennessee Waltz extortion case.

Edmund Ford Sr. told The Commercial Appeal that he expects his 70-year-old brother to be released to a halfway house on Aug. 20.

Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Chris Burke said he couldn't comment on a specific inmate. He said inmates can be released to a halfway house during the last year of their sentence.

Ford went to prison in 2008 after he was convicted of taking more than $50,000 in cash from undercover agents posing as businessmen seeking favors in the Tennessee Legislature.

Ten others convicted, including four other former lawmakers, have served their sentences.
