Sumner Co. School Board Revises Budget, Sends To Commission

Posted: Updated:

GALLATIN, Tenn. - The Sumner County School Board met again Thursday night to discuss budget issues that have delayed the first day of school.

The School Board meeting was held Thursday in front of a packed house of parents and educators. The gymnasium was even set up to accommodate overflow spectators. It was estimated that about 400 to 500 people attended the meeting.

Sumner Schools Director Del Phillips recommended cuts including not adding eight high school guidance counselors, eliminating adult education and cuts to the central office which would cut about $1 million from the schools' budget. Phillips asked for the Commission to allocate seven cents from the capital account to make up the $2.7 million difference.

School Board members also took time during the meeting to remind parents and students that no school sports games would be played until school officially starts. The first football game of the year in Sumner County has been scheduled for August 17.

The Board later voted 7-4 to accept Phillips' recommendation to remove eight additional guidance counselors from the budget.

The Sumner County School Board voted 11-0 to adopt Phillip's amended budget and asked the County Commission to call a special meeting to approve the proposed budget.

At the end of the meeting there was still no clear date on when schools might start. According to School Board member Beth Cox, if the County Commission meeting is held Monday and the new budget is approved, then schools could open Wednesday, August 15.

County Commissioners had approved an additional $2.2 million in funding for the school system Monday.

School was scheduled to start Monday, but it was delayed.
