Identity Of Assisted Living Fire Victim Released

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities in Jackson said a 62-year-old resident of an assisted living center died of smoke inhalation when a fire began in his bedroom.

According to The Jackson Sun, the victim was Johnny Wayne Brown.

Helen Daniel, who owns Jackson Independent Living, said Brown moved in a few months ago and was well liked by other residents.

The seven other people who lived at the center were temporarily placed in area nursing homes after being displaced by the fire on Tuesday.

Madison County Fire Chief Eric Turner said the center had working smoke detectors, but did not have a fire sprinkler system.

The newspaper reported that retirement homes that are not certified through the state, such as independent living facilities, aren't required to have sprinklers.
