Six Arrested In Tennessee Beating Death

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - Jackson police have arrested six men after they were indicted on murder charges in the death of a Madison County man found beaten and lying on a road.

The Jackson Sun reported that according to police, at least some of the men charged with first-degree murder and felony murder are gang members. Terrell Reid, James Roberson, Jonique Merriweather, Michael Smith, Frank Massengill, and Byron Purdy were arrested Friday. They're being held in the Madison County Jail.

The victim, 35-year-old Antwan Brooks of the Denmark community, died at a hospital early last Sunday following the beating.

Brooks' mother, Cynthia Williams, said the arrests give her a little peace.

Jackson police Lt. Tyreece Miller said the motive for the beating is still under investigation.

But he said police have confirmed that "some if not all" of the suspects have gang ties.
