NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A two-year-old child was critically injured in a multiple vehicle crash that slowed traffic on Interstate 40 eastbound for hours.

The crash occurred around 9 a.m. Wednesday at Briley Parkway. Metro Police and TDOT blocked the three center lanes to investigate the crash.

Police said the child's mother, 43-year-old Barbara Langley, was stopped in traffic when she was hit from behind by a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Michael McDowell. McDowell told police that he saw Langley but was unable to stop in time. McDowell was not injured.

According to officials, Langley escaped without serious injuries, but her two-year-old son, LaDaveous Ivory, was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in critical condition. He was riding in a unsecured booster seat located directly behind the driver.

Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement.

The roadway was cleared by noon.
