MADISON, Tenn. – Her memory may be foggy, but a 65-year-old remembers walking past a man on the Peeler Park Greenway on Monday around noon.

"I couldn't even really tell his age," said the woman, who did not want to be identified. "In an instant he had me around the neck."

Moments later, he had her down a nearby trail while telling her to undo her pants.

"He said, 'it's your lucky day, [expletive],'" she said. "I looked at him and I said 'you know the Lord would not want you to do that. He would not want you to do this. Please do not do that to me.'"

Somehow he listened.

"He said if I knew the Lord I wouldn't be here," she went on to say.

Her attacker still wanted money. When she gave him her keys for access to her purse she tried to walk out on her own. That's when he started punching.

"She was face down," said Harold Brown who was one of two men who were walking nearby and heard her cries. "Help me. It wasn't really clear so I heard her say again help me."

Parks Police and Metro officers are patrolling the Greenway in cars and on horseback as people who know what happened want others to be more aware.

"If you're not packing, you need to have mace, you need have something, a cell phone, you need to have something and you need to be aware of everything that goes on around you," said Brown.

Until the man is caught the memory of what happened will haunt the woman just like what she thought as it was happening.

"I'm going to die or be raped," she recalled.

The woman said it could be a long time before she's comfortable walking again, but even when she is it will likely always be with protection or a buddy.

If you know anything about this attack call Metro Police.
