Local Philanthropist Ann Carell Passes Away

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Beloved local philanthropist Ann Carell, wife of the late Monroe Carell Jr., has passed away.

Friends of the family told NewsChannel 5 that Carell died Monday. Carell and her husband were integral in creating the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University as well as Pope John Paul High School in Hendersonville.

Married for 52 years, the couple set up numerous scholarships, including several full tuition scholarships for students at Vanderbilt University working their way through college and scholarships at Aquinas College for women planning to enter the Dominican order. The Carell's also created at $5 million library at Harpeth Hall School, called the Ann Scott Carell Library.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband in 2008. She leaves behind three daughters and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
