VAN, Texas (CBS/AP) - Five children were killed and seven other people injured after an overcrowded SUV heading to a water park veered off an interstate highway and overturned in east Texas.
The dead included two boys and three girls, identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety as: 13-year-old Rosvaelia Jaimes; 7-year-old Omar Jaimes; 6-year-old Saideth Acuna; 3-year-old Ulisa Acuna; and 2-year-old Judith Jaimes. DPS said they all came from Marshall.
Two adults and five other children were taken to the hospital with injuries but their conditions had not been released. The crash occurred near Van, about 70 miles east of Dallas. No other vehicles were involved.
DPS spokeswoman Jean Dark said the GMC Envoy was carrying too many passengers and lacked child safety seats, as required by law. Nine of the children were thrown from the vehicle as it rolled.
Dark told the Tyler Morning Telegraph the "horrific scene" was among the worst she had ever seen.
