Police Say Alcohol Was Factor In Deadly Head-On Collision

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Police said alcohol was a factor in a head-on collision that killed one driver and injured another on Wednesday night.

Police said 44-year-old John Childress was driving along Saundersville Road in GMC Jimmy SUV around 9:55 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a GMC van.

Both Childress and the driver of the van, 40-year-old Enrique J. Sacco, had to be extricated from their vehicles.

Childress died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Sacco was taken to Vanderbilt in critical condition.

Both men were wearing seatbelts.

First responders detected that Childress smelled strongly of alcohol. Police said his record reflects three DUI convictions in Nashville, two in 1998 and one in 2009.
