NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Several Tennessee lawmakers are stirring up controversy at the GOP convention in Tampa.
State representative Joe Carr has come under fire for comments he allegedly made at a recent fundraiser. A reporter for the Memphis Flyer claims Carr defended embattled Missouri senate candidate Todd Akin by agreeing with Akin's claims that a woman's body has a biological mechanism to defend against rape.
Carr denied making the comment and says it was stupid for Akin to use the phrase "legitimate rape.", but said he didn't disagree with the biology controversy saying quote "I don't know enough about the science to comment on whether it was accurate or inaccurate."
Another state lawmaker apparently defending Akin is Senator Stacey Campfield, who wrote in his blog -- quote "Akin wrong? not so fast..." and then linked an article about the stress of rape interfering with reproduction.
Campfield also took aim at the Tennessee Black Caucus supporting a strongly worded e-mail critical of the group.
Finally Campfield also called people on the Gulf Coast preparing for Hurricane Isaac "sissies" -- claiming the storm isn't all that bad.
