'Smiling Snake' Startles Driver In Knoxville

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A man driving on Interstate 40 in Knoxville said a snake popped its head out of an air conditioner vent and seemed to smile at him.

According to WBIR-TV, the unidentified motorist pulled to the side of the highway and called for help. State Trooper John Carr and an animal control officer responded. They could see the snake in the dashboard, but couldn't get it out.

Carr said in six years on the patrol, this was his first snake in the car call, but he said those were common when he worked as a sheriff's deputy.

The driver had his car towed to a safer location so the dashboard could be disassembled and the snake removed.

A tiny corn snake was found dead inside.
