Governor Wraps Up Education Listening Tour

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has concluded a series of meetings on the future of higher education in the state.

Over the summer, Haslam listened to comments in seven cities from Blountville to Memphis. He also sought input from educators, business leaders and legislators.

Republican state Senator Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro wonders if having three higher education governing bodies is the most useful approach. Ketron told WMOT-FM Tennessee is probably the only state with that many. The Tennessee Higher Education Commission oversees the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees and the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Ketron said lawmakers will look hard at that structure.

Haslam said state government needs to be more intentional about allocating funds and resources.
