NASHVILLE, Tenn. - An elderly woman was killed after she took a nasty spill down an escalator at a local grocery store.

Officers were called to the Harris Teeter on West End Boulevard just after 4 p.m. Wednesday after 83-year-old Martha Short fell. According to police as Short was leaving the store and going to the lower parking garage, her cart rolled forward causing her to fall to the bottom of the escalator.

"All of the sudden she started heading to the wrong escalator that is not for the carts and everyone in Starbucks saw it start to happen and everybody kind of gasped for air and all of a sudden the cart started going down," said Katie Wells, who witnessed the accident.

Wells rushed to her side and dialed 911.

"I was just on the phone and with the dispatcher and they were walking me through ways to check and see if she was still breathing," said Wells.

Short was transported to a local hospital in serious condition and later died.

Harris Teeter released this statement in regards to the incident:

"Harris Teeter deeply regrets the incident that took place at its Belle Meade store and would like to express its condolences to family and friends also affected. We work very hard to maintain a safe store environment for both our customers and our associates, and the news of what happened today is extremely upsetting. The company has launched an internal investigation."
