MURFREESBORO,
Tenn. – A Rutherford
County man whose identity was stolen was detained by custom officials when he
returned to the country after his honeymoon.
Scott Miller, age
42, said there were moments from his wedding day he recalls fondly,
but it's the end of his honeymoon he's trying to forget.
"We went on
a cruise to the Bahamas," said Miller.
Miller and his
new bride had just put their feet back on American soil Sunday when customs
agents pulled him aside.
"They
actually separated me from my wife, and that's when you start to wonder, ‘what's
going on,'" said Miller.
The customs
agents told Miller he had multiple warrants out for his arrest. They also
informed him he was listed as a registered sex offender.
"That's not
good. That's not good because I'm not that guy," Miller said.
Someone had
stolen his name and social security number, which they used when they were
arrested on multiple occasions – all under the name of Scott Miller.
"If I hold
this (license) up and say, ‘this is who I am,' I'll be getting arrested 10
minutes later for those warrants," he said.
The real Scott
Miller was not a registered sex offender. There were no warrants out for his
arrest. Customs agents only figured out they had the wrong guy after they ran
his fingerprints.
"I just want
to be me, you know. I don't want anyone else to be me. I don't want to be
accused of anything that I haven't done," said Miller.
Miller traced
those warrants back to Missouri. The name on them is Christopher Wayne Lovies.
The two men went to high school together.
Miller was
working to get a new social security number.
