Three Mid-State Schools Chosen As National Blue Ribbon Schools

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Three mid-state schools are among six Tennessee schools that have been chosen as a 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

They include Cascade Elementary in Bedford County, Merrol Hyde Magnet School in Sumner County, and The Discovery School at Reeves Rogers in Murfreesboro.

The U.S. Department of Education presents the award to public and private schools whose students attain and maintain high academic goals that work toward closing achievement gaps.

"This is an outstanding accomplishment that took effort from students, teachers, administrators and parents," Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman said. "It is so important for us to recognize the good work that goes on in Tennessee schools and try to replicate that success."

Three other Tennessee schools were among the 269 winning schools nationwide. They include E.E. Jeter Elementary in Shelby County, Glenwood Elementary in Oak Ridge, and John Hay Elementary in Hamblen County.

All schools receive $2,500 and recognition during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November.

Each of Tennessee's winners were recognized as Exemplary High Performing schools, recognized among their state's highest-performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Another category is "Exemplary Improving," in which schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds demonstrate the most progress in improving student achievement levels as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
