NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Friday night was the first of ten nights for the Tennessee State Fair in Nashville. Once again this year safety is a priority for fair organizers.
Families and groups of friends crowded into the midway just as the fair got underway. Many of them look forward to the fair every year. For others, it was their first time.
"We've actually never been to this fair before and she was like guys it's the best thing in all of Tennessee so you have to come with me this year. So here we are," said Maleka Muonviri.
Rhonda Walker stared up at the Mega Drop. He grandchildren were on the ride that reaches high above the midway. She was more concerned about their free-fall, than safety issues out on the midway.
"No because I knew the police was out here and it's better than what it has been. They have upgraded some," Walker said.
Making this fair a safe place for families to play has been top priority.
"Anywhere on the fairgrounds you're going to see an officer in uniform and you're going to feel safe at the Tennessee State Fair," said Kelsey Ross, with the Tennessee State Fair.
Moving the midway to the top of the hill, keeping everything in a more manageable space, was a security move fair organizers made last year.
The fair runs through September 16, 2012 and there are some new things here for you to check out. The biggest is the equestrian arena. It's back at the fair for the first time in 40 years. Agriculture is the main focus of the fair and residents will find plenty of it, along with all the rides and delicious fair food.
