CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Investigators
believe they have the man responsible for a shooting just outside a Montgomery County daycare center Thursday. Police
arrested Travis Skelton Friday and charged him with two counts of aggravated
assault.
The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. Thursday on Chapel Street in
Clarksville near the Kiddieland Day Nursery.
Investigators
said Skelton was once in a relationship with the female victim, Nakita Butler,
and he is also the father of two of her children. Butler had just dropped the
children off at the Kiddieland Day Nursery in Clarksville when Skelton
allegedly got into a fight with Butler's new boyfriend. Jim Knoll with
the Clarksville Police Department said Butler tried to break up the fight. At some
point, police say Skelton pulled a gun and shot them both. Shots hit the
25-year-old male three times in the arm and hand, and a bullet also grazed his
head. No one was seriously hurt. Both individuals were treated
and released from Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Officials credited workers with immediately putting
the daycare on lock down. Saying working took the children to the back for
safety, and no children were injured.
