MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The city of Memphis is planning to trade gas cards and Grizzlies tickets for guns.
The Commercial Appeal reported the city and its partners on Saturday will give a $50 Mapco gas card for each gun a person turns in, with a maximum of three gas cards per person. Those who surrender guns will also receive two free tickets to a preseason Memphis Grizzlies game.
Memphis Police director Toney Armstrong said the guns will be taken on a "no questions asked" basis and will be destroyed. The weapons will not be tested or inspected.
City Councilman Myron Lowery started the program in 1994 and has held six events over the years. They have brought in more than 2,000 firearms.
