Group Asks Tennessee To Stop Airing Pregame Prayer

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- An organization promoting the separation of church and state wants Tennessee to stop having a clergy member pray over the Neyland Stadium loudspeaker before Volunteers' football games.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation has sent a letter to Tennessee Chancellor Jimmy Cheek asking that the school stop holding public prayers at university functions and sporting events. University spokesperson Margie Nichols confirmed the school had received the letter and indicated they would have an official response later this week.

The letter points that Chattanooga decided last week to stop its use of pregame prayer. Chattanooga officials decided to observe a moment of silence instead of having a spoken prayer before its home football games.
