NASHVILLE,
Tenn.- A record number people spent their Saturday morning volunteering with
Hands on Nashville. The organization mobilized more than 2,000 volunteers to
assist with projects at nearly 60 Metropolitan Nashville schools.
One dozen Nike employees spent hours painting McGavock High
School.
"It's not just painting to me
because I feel like we're actually restoring a part of McGavock," volunteer and
McGavock alum Larry Cole said.
"If you can get out and do
something bigger than yourself then you're improving," volunteer Nicole Drake
added. "Even if it's just in your community or around the world, a small step
can be a big step."
Volunteers from Hip Donelson and
the Donelson Gateway Project planted flowers at Two Rivers Middle School as
part of an independent project.
"When
they drive in here on Monday, they're going to be incredibly happy to see the
color," Jeff Syracuse with the Donelson Gateway Project said. "Especially as
things start to bloom next spring, when these roses bloom, they're going to be
thrilled."
They're
hoping the look will give this transitioning community a little more curb
appeal.
"As people move into this community, thinking about buying a
home here, one of the first things you look at are the schools.
On
one day, for a few hours, thousands answered the call. Volunteers continue to
show their commitment to Metro schools and each other.
