MT. JULIET, Tenn. – Mt. Juliet city commissioners have passed the ordinance to start a fire department in Wilson County's fastest growing town.

After years of sitting idle on a docket, the idea of a city fire department has finally been approved.

The issue was passed at Monday night's board meeting. Vice Mayor James Maness has been pushing for a plan to open a fire station within city limits that will work with the county during emergencies.

The issue stalled because residents did not want to pay both county and city taxes. After much debate, commissioners approved the plan this evening.

At the first vote on September 10, Maness said existing revenue sources would pay for the new fire department.

"The money and the revenue and the monies that are collected there goes specifically into a fund that is designated for emergency services," he said.

The ordinance will initially fund one fire station, with another station to open 2015.
